How to Breed Frogs in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 2 slimeballs (more to speed up tadpoles)
- 2 frogs
- Lead (optional)
- Water bucket (to transport tadpoles)
Step by step
- Find frogs in swamp or mangrove swamp biomes. They follow a player holding a slimeball from up to 6 blocks away, and you can also move them with a lead.
- Get slimeballs by killing small slimes (swamps at night or slime chunks below Y=40) - our slimeball guide covers farming them.
- Feed one slimeball to each frog. Hearts appear and one of the two becomes pregnant.
- The pregnant frog hops to a water block with another water block next to it and air above, and lays frogspawn on the surface.
- Frogspawn hatches after 3-10 minutes into 2-5 tadpoles. Tadpoles are purely aquatic: they die in under 20 seconds out of water, so scoop them up with a water bucket to move them safely.
- Each tadpole becomes a frog after 20 minutes. Feeding a tadpole a slimeball cuts the remaining time by 10% per use.
- The frog variant (temperate, warm or cold) is decided by the biome where the tadpole grows up, not by its parents - transport tadpoles by bucket to raise the variant you want, since each variant produces a different froglight color.
Java vs Bedrock
Breeding works the same in Java and Bedrock: slimeballs trigger love mode, frogspawn needs water with air above, and breeding drops 1-7 XP. Tadpole growth (20 minutes, 10% off per slimeball) is identical too.
Versions: Frogs were added in The Wild Update: Java 1.19 (22w11a) and Bedrock 1.19.0.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a specific frog variant?
The variant depends only on the climate of the biome where the tadpole matures: temperate (orange) in moderate biomes, warm (white) in hot biomes like jungles and deserts, cold (green) in snowy biomes. Bucket the tadpole to the biome you want before it grows up.
Does any puddle work for breeding?
The pregnant frog needs a water block with at least one adjacent water block (source or flowing) and air above it. A 1-block puddle will not do - give it a small pool.
What do tadpoles eat?
Nothing by default - they grow up in 20 minutes on their own. Slimeballs just accelerate growth by 10% of the remaining time each.
