How to Breed Hoglins in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Feed crimson fungus to each of two hoglins. A baby hoglin spawns right away, the parents need 5 minutes before breeding again (1 minute in Bedrock), and you get 1-7 XP. Hoglins stay hostile the whole time, so breed them inside a secure pen.

What you need

Crimson fungus (2 per breeding)
2 hoglins
A strong, covered pen in the Nether

Step by step

Gather crimson fungus in the Nether's crimson forests - the same biome where hoglins spawn.
Build a secure pen first. Hoglins attack on sight, even while in love mode, and their tusks can launch you into the air.
Lure two hoglins in by holding crimson fungus, or push them with a shield. Placed warped fungus repels hoglins, so keep it away from the pen.
Feed crimson fungus to each hoglin: hearts appear and a baby hoglin spawns, plus 1-7 XP. Feeding also stops hoglins from despawning, and bred babies never despawn.
The parents can breed again after 5 minutes (1 minute in Bedrock). Babies grow up in 20 minutes; each crimson fungus you feed a baby cuts the remaining time by 10%. Harvest adults for porkchops and leather.

Java vs Bedrock

Breeding works the same in Java and Bedrock except the parents' cooldown: 5 minutes in Java, 1 minute in Bedrock. A hoglin fleeing from placed warped fungus, a Nether portal or a respawn anchor cannot be bred in either edition, and zoglins can never breed.

Versions: Hoglins were added in the Nether Update (1.16, June 2020) and are the only hostile mob you can breed, designed as the Nether's renewable meat source.

Frequently asked questions

Why won't my hoglin breed?

Hoglins that are running away from placed warped fungus, Nether portals or respawn anchors refuse to breed. Move the repellents away, let the hoglin calm down, then feed it again.

Is a hoglin farm worth it?

It is the Nether's only renewable porkchop and leather source. With a covered pen and crimson fungus, you get steak-tier food without returning to the Overworld.

What happens to hoglins in the Overworld?

A hoglin brought through a portal zombifies into a zoglin after about 15 seconds. Zoglins attack everything, cannot breed and cannot be turned back.
