How to Barter with Piglins in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Gold ingots (many)
- One piece of gold armor (helmet is cheapest)
- Hoppers and chests for a farm (optional)
- Gold ingots (a stack or more)
- One gold armor piece
Step by step
- Find piglins: they live in crimson forests and nether wastes, and guard bastion remnants. Only adult piglins barter - babies pocket the gold, and piglin brutes ignore it.
- Wear at least one piece of gold armor: any gold piece stops adult piglins from attacking on sight.
- Bring stacks of gold ingots, farmed from a gold farm or mined as nether gold ore.
- Drop an ingot near an adult piglin or use it directly on them. Baby piglins do not barter; they just steal the ingot.
- Wait 6 seconds while the piglin examines the gold, then catch the thrown item. Full cycle: about 6 seconds per ingot in Java, 8 in Bedrock.
- Best drops: ender pearls (2-4 at ~2.1% (about one pearl drop per 16 ingots)), splash and drinkable fire resistance potions, obsidian and crying obsidian, nether quartz, soul speed enchanted books (~1.1%) and iron boots.
- Build a bartering farm: trap piglins on hoppers, pipe gold in, and collect chests full of pearls and potions automatically.
- Stay safe: never open chests, mine gold blocks, or attack piglins nearby while bartering - it angers every piglin around. In Bedrock an angered piglin finishes the barter instantly before attacking.
- Use it for speedrunning: bartering is the standard speedrun route to ender pearls - far faster than hunting endermen.
Java vs Bedrock
The bartering cycle is 6.05 seconds in Java and 8 seconds in Bedrock. If a piglin zombifies mid-barter, Java drops the ingot immediately while Bedrock keeps it held until the zombified piglin dies.
Versions: Bartering exists since 1.16 (Nether Update). The loot table was rebalanced once in 1.16.2 and has been stable since.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best item from piglin bartering?
Ender pearls: bartering is one of the fastest pearl sources in the game, at roughly 2.1% per ingot in stacks of 2-4. Speedrunners build entire strategies around it. Soul Speed books and fire resistance potions are the other premium drops.
Why do piglins attack me when I barter?
You are missing gold armor, you opened a chest or mined gold near them, or you hit one. Adult piglins tolerate players wearing at least one gold piece, but breaking containers or gold blocks nearby enrages them regardless.
Can baby piglins barter?
No. Baby piglins pick up the gold ingot and run off with it, so keep babies out of your bartering setup or your gold disappears with no return.
What can you get from bartering with piglins?
Ender pearls (2-4), obsidian, fire resistance potions and splash potions, nether quartz, iron nuggets, string, gravel, leather, soul speed enchanted books and iron boots, water bottles, and dried ghasts - each gold ingot buys one random item.
Why won't the piglin take my gold?
It is a baby piglin (they pocket gold without bartering), a piglin brute (they never barter), or a piglin that is already examining an ingot or has been hit. Wait for it to finish or find another adult piglin.
How many gold ingots for ender pearls?
The ender pearl drop is about 2.1% per ingot, giving 2-4 pearls - on average one pearl per 16 ingots, so around 48 ingots for a typical stack of 12 pearls.
Do piglins barter in the Overworld?
No - piglins zombify within seconds of entering the Overworld or the End. Bartering only works in the Nether.
