Step by step

Prepare for the Nether: bring armor, a shield, food, building blocks and fire resistance potions. Record your portal coordinates before exploring.
Wear a gold armor piece to avoid provoking ordinary piglins just by being nearby. Gold does not protect you from piglin brutes, or from piglins angered by opening containers, mining gold or attacking piglins.
Search Nether biomes other than basalt deltas. A bastion can extend into basalt deltas, but cannot start generating there.
Look for large blackstone buildings with ramparts and passages. Explore carefully rather than relying on a fixed search height, and watch for lava and drops.
Expand your search beyond the region containing a fortress. Regions are 432 by 432 blocks in Java and 480 by 480 in Bedrock; moving a fixed distance does not guarantee a new region or a bastion.
With cheats enabled, run /locate structure minecraft:bastion_remnant in Java or /locate structure bastion_remnant in Bedrock while in the Nether to find bastion coordinates.
Identify the variant: bridge, hoglin stables, housing units or treasure room. Treasure rooms have bridges above a lava floor, a magma cube spawner and a central gold-and-loot area.
For a netherite upgrade smithing template, check treasure chests in the treasure-room variant: they guarantee 1 template. Bridge, hoglin stable and generic chests each have a 10% chance. Not every chest in a treasure-room bastion uses the treasure loot table.
Be careful around piglin brutes: they spawn with the structure and do not respawn after being killed. Normal biome mobs can still spawn, so clearing the original guards does not make a bastion permanently safe.
Keep an escape route and return to your marked portal. Gold armor alone does not prevent every piglin attack.
