How to Find Ancient Debris in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Ancient debris generates in the Nether, most commonly around Y=16, never naturally exposed to air. Mine it with a diamond or netherite pickaxe: any other tool drops nothing. Its blast resistance of 1,200 makes it immune to normal explosions.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Bring a diamond or netherite pickaxe: ancient debris drops itself only with those, and nothing with any other tool.
  2. Go to the Nether and look around Y=16, where there is the most ancient debris on average.
  3. In Java Edition, up to two clusters generate per chunk: 0-3 debris with a triangle distribution from Y=8 to Y=24, and 0-2 spread evenly from Y=8 to Y=119.
  4. In Bedrock Edition, up to five clusters generate per chunk: two of 0-3 evenly from Y=8 to Y=23, and three of 0-2 evenly from Y=8 to Y=119.
  5. Debris is never naturally exposed to air. It replaces netherrack, and in Java Edition also basalt and blackstone.
  6. Because of its blast resistance (1,200), normal explosions do not destroy it.
  7. Smelt it in a furnace or blast furnace to get netherite scrap, plus 2 XP when you take it out.
  8. Or loot bastion remnant chests: a hoglin stable chest has 1 debris at 12% and 2 at 5%, a treasure chest 1 at 24.5% and 2 at 10.3%, and a generic chest 1 at 13.5% (Java Edition figures).

Java vs Bedrock

Bedrock Edition bastion chest chances differ: hoglin stable chests 1 debris at 5.7%, generic chests 1 at 13.5%, treasure chests 2 at 11.3%. The item floats on lava and is immune to fire in both editions.
