How to Build a Treehouse in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Pick a jungle or dark oak giant (or grow your own 2x2 spruce), build a platform around the trunk at mid-height, walls set back from the edge, a ladder or trapdoor entry, and rope bridges to neighbors. Leaves are your best decoration.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Choose the tree: jungle giants and 2x2 spruces are the classics. No giant tree? Plant 4 spruce saplings in a square and bone-meal them - instant mega-trunk.
  2. Build a ring platform around the trunk at 8-12 blocks up, 2-3 blocks wider than the trunk on each side.
  3. Cabin walls: a 7x7 room on the platform with the trunk inside it looks natural. Walls of planks, log corners, lots of windows.
  4. Access: a ladder up the trunk to a trapdoor in the floor is the safest entry - mobs cannot follow.
  5. Roof: a simple stairs pyramid works; let leaves grow over the edges so the cabin blends into the canopy.
  6. Expand sideways: rope bridges (slabs + fence rails) to neighboring trees, each with its own tiny room - bedroom, storage, lookout.
  7. Decorate with nature: hanging lanterns, leaf blocks, flower pots and vines. A treehouse should look grown, not placed.
  8. Light everything - canopies are dark and mobs spawn on unlit platforms.

Java vs Bedrock

Identical on Java and Bedrock.

Versions: Mega spruce and jungle trees exist in every current version. Bamboo and mangrove make great tropical variants.

Frequently asked questions

Can mobs reach my treehouse?

Spiders climb, and phantoms fly - light every platform and add a trapdoor entry. Nothing else reaches you up there.

How high should I build?

8-12 blocks up clears ground mobs and keeps the view. Higher than 20 and the climb gets annoying without a water elevator.
