How to Find a Fossil in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Fossils are giant buried skeletons of bone blocks that rarely generate in deserts, swamps and mangrove swamps. Deep fossils hide diamond ore - two 1-in-64 attempts per chunk make them a lucky miner's prize.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Pick the right biomes: fossils generate only in deserts, swamps and mangrove swamps - nowhere else in the Overworld.
  2. Understand the odds: each chunk gets two generation attempts at a 1/64 chance each, at Y 0 to 320 or deep down at Y -63 to -8.
  3. Mine, do not dig randomly: fossils almost never touch the surface - you find them while branch mining or caving, not by hunting from above.
  4. Recognize the bones: giant skulls and spines made of bone blocks - four skull variants and four spine variants, always partially eroded.
  5. Harvest the bone blocks: each bone block crafts into 9 bone meal - a full fossil is a mountain of fertilizer for your farms.
  6. Watch for ore: fossils above Y=0 have coal ore embedded in the bones, and fossils below Y=-8 hide diamond or deepslate diamond ore - the real jackpot.
  7. Note the quirk: fossils are features, not structures, so they generate even in worlds with Generate Structures turned off.
  8. Look for nether cousins: soul sand valleys have their own nether fossils - bone block skeletons without the ore.

Java vs Bedrock

Generation rules match across editions. The one notable difference: Java fossils can contain regular diamond ore as well as deepslate diamond ore, matching the depth they generate at.

Versions: Added in 1.10 - the Frostburn Update (16w20a). Diamond ore in deep fossils arrived later, when world generation dropped below Y=0 in 1.18.

Frequently asked questions

Where do fossils spawn in Minecraft?

Only in desert, swamp and mangrove swamp biomes, buried underground - each chunk has two 1-in-64 generation attempts. They almost never reach the surface, so you find them while mining.

What are fossils good for in Minecraft?

Bone blocks - each one crafts into 9 bone meal, so a fossil is a huge fertilizer supply. Fossils below Y=-8 also have diamond ore embedded in the bones, and shallower ones have coal ore.

How rare are fossils in Minecraft?

Very: a 1/64 chance per generation attempt, two attempts per chunk, and only in three biomes. There is no way to track them - finding one is pure mining luck, which is exactly what makes it fun.
