How to Find Your Minecraft World Seed

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Java: run /seed in chat (needs cheats or operator). Bedrock: open the world settings - the seed is listed there and viewing it needs no cheats. Use the seed when creating a world to generate the same terrain again.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Java singleplayer with cheats: open chat (T) and run /seed. The seed appears in chat - click it to copy it.
  2. Java without cheats: press Esc > Open to LAN > Allow Cheats: ON > Start LAN World, then run /seed. Cheats turn off again when you quit the world.
  3. Java on a server: only operators can run /seed - ask an admin.
  4. Bedrock: pause > Settings (or the pencil icon next to the world in the list) and scroll the Game section - the seed is shown there in plain sight, and looking at it does not affect achievements.
  5. Use it: when creating a new world, paste the number into the Seed field to generate the same terrain.
  6. Share it with friends so they spawn in the same world layout - handy with our famous seeds lists.

Java vs Bedrock

Java and Bedrock seeds are not interchangeable: the same number produces a different world on each edition.

Versions: A seed only reproduces the same world on the same edition and roughly the same version - world generation changed at 1.18, so seeds from before generate different terrain today.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get the seed of a very old world?

Yes - /seed works on any Java world you can open, and Bedrock always shows the seed in settings, no matter when the world was created.

Does checking the seed disable achievements?

No. Viewing it on Bedrock is free; on Java, /seed needs cheats, but Java has no achievement lockout anyway.
