How to Teleport in Minecraft (Commands and Survival)

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: With cheats on, open chat and run /tp @s X Y Z to teleport to coordinates, or /tp @s PlayerName to jump to another player. Without cheats, teleporting means ender pearls, chorus fruit or portals - there is no free teleport in survival.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Command teleport: enable cheats, open chat and type /tp @s 100 64 -250 to teleport to those coordinates. Use ~ for relative jumps: /tp @s ~50 ~ ~ moves you 50 blocks east.
  2. Teleport to a player: /tp @s Alex sends you to Alex. On servers, /tp Alex Steve teleports one player to another (operator only).
  3. Bring something to you: /tp @e[type=cow,limit=1] @s teleports the nearest cow to you - handy for lost pets with name tags.
  4. Bedrock extras: /tp also accepts facing angles, and both editions support /teleport as an alias of /tp.
  5. Survival teleport 1: throw an ender pearl. You land where it lands and take 5 fall damage - wear Feather Falling and never pearl into unloaded gaps.
  6. Survival teleport 2: eat chorus fruit for a random 8-block teleport in any direction, including through walls and downward. It can save you from a cave-in or drop you into lava.
  7. Survival teleport 3: portals. Nether travel moves you 8 overworld blocks per nether block, so a portal pair is the fastest long-distance 'teleport' without cheats.
  8. Safety: before teleporting, note your current coordinates (F3 on Java, or the world 'show coordinates' setting on Bedrock) so you can always teleport back.

Java vs Bedrock

Command syntax is the same in both editions. In Java, F3 shows coordinates; in Bedrock, enable Show Coordinates in world settings - no cheats needed for that toggle.

Versions: /tp has existed since Java Classic (modern form since 1.3.1) and in Bedrock since early versions. Ender pearls teleport since Beta 1.9; chorus fruit since 1.9.

Frequently asked questions

How do I teleport without cheats?

Ender pearls, chorus fruit and nether portals are the only vanilla options. Many multiplayer servers add /home, /spawn and /tpa commands - check the server's help menu.

Why does /tp kill me sometimes?

You can teleport into blocks or over the void: the command does not check safety. Aim a few blocks above ground (Y is the middle coordinate) and pick a spot you have seen.

Can I teleport to my bed?

Not with vanilla commands - there is no bed coordinate lookup. Die with keep_inventory off and you respawn at your bed; otherwise note the bed's coordinates and /tp there.
