How to Get a Blue Axolotl in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Blue axolotls do not spawn naturally. Breed two non-blue axolotls using buckets of tropical fish for a 1 in 1,200 chance of a blue baby. Once you have a blue parent, babies can also inherit blue; two blue parents produce blue babies.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Find axolotls: they spawn underwater in lush caves, only where there is a clay block less than five blocks below the water.
  2. Catch them with a water bucket (bucket of axolotl) and carry them to a safe breeding pool near your base - axolotls die after 5 minutes out of water.
  3. Stock up on buckets of tropical fish: scoop tropical fish from warm oceans with buckets. This is the only food that breeds axolotls.
  4. Breed non-blue pairs using buckets of tropical fish: each baby has a 1/1,200 blue mutation chance; otherwise it inherits one parent's color at random. Parents can breed again after 5 minutes in Java or 1 minute in Bedrock.
  5. Speed up the grind: feed babies buckets of tropical fish - each use cuts 10% off the remaining 20-minute growth time, so adults recycle into the breeding pool faster.
  6. Scale up: keep every adult, not just blue ones - more breeding pairs means more rolls of the 1/1200 dice per cycle.
  7. When you get a blue axolotl, breed it with another adult. Babies can inherit blue from that parent as well as get the rare mutation. Once both parents are blue, all their babies are blue. Axolotls collected and released with a water bucket do not despawn, though they still need protection from harm.

Java vs Bedrock

The breeding cooldown is 5 minutes in Java and 1 minute in Bedrock. The blue mutation chance and inheritance rule apply in both editions. A shorter cooldown does not guarantee a blue baby within a fixed time.

Frequently asked questions

Can blue axolotls spawn in the wild?

No. Naturally spawned axolotls are not blue. Breed non-blue parents for the rare 1/1,200 blue mutation; after obtaining a blue parent, offspring can also inherit its color.

Do two blue axolotls make blue babies?

Yes. A baby either gets the blue mutation or inherits one parent's color. With two blue parents, either result is blue, so every baby is blue.

How many axolotls do I need to breed for a blue one?

With two non-blue parents, each baby has an independent 1/1,200 chance. The expected number is 1,200 babies, calculated as 1 divided by that probability, but it is not a guarantee: a blue baby may arrive sooner or much later.
