How to Get a Goat Horn in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Nothing to craft - just patience
- A tree trunk, stone or ore block as bait
- Wheat (to breed goats for more horns)
- Lead or boat (optional, to move goats)
Step by step
- Find goats in the mountain biomes: jagged peaks, frozen peaks and snowy slopes.
- Stand still 4-16 blocks from a goat with a tree trunk, stone or ore block right behind you. Goats try to ram one stationary target every 30 seconds to 5 minutes.
- When it charges, sidestep at the last moment. If the goat misses you and slams into the hard block, one of its horns snaps off and drops.
- Each adult goat drops up to 2 horns and they do not regrow, and each goat drops only one horn variant - so you need several goats for the full set.
- Screaming goats (2% of spawns, instantly recognizable by their scream) drop the four rarest variants: Admire, Call, Yearn and Dream. Breeding two screamers gives an almost guaranteed screaming baby.
- Blow the horn to play a loud sound that carries a long way - great for signaling friends across a mountain.
Java vs Bedrock
The mechanic is the same in Java and Bedrock: rams every 30 seconds to 5 minutes and up to 2 horns per goat. Screaming genetics differ slightly - two screaming parents always produce a screamer in Java, and 98% of the time in Bedrock.
Versions: Goat horns were announced for Caves & Cliffs but landed with The Wild Update: Java 1.19 (22w17a) and Bedrock 1.19.0.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my goat ram me?
It only targets unmoving mobs and players within 4-16 blocks, and only every 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Stand perfectly still in the open - even a small step resets its interest.
Do goat horns grow back?
No. Once a goat has dropped both horns it is done - breed more goats with wheat to keep the farm running.
Which goat drops which horn?
Regular goats give Ponder, Sing, Seek or Feel; screaming goats give Admire, Call, Yearn or Dream. Each individual goat is locked to a single variant, so collecting all eight means finding or breeding several goats.
