How to Get a Pitcher Plant in Minecraft (1.20)
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Pitcher pod (sniffer digging)
- Farmland + hoe
- Bone meal (optional, speeds the crop)
Step by step
- Get a sniffer: brush suspicious sand in warm ocean ruins for a sniffer egg, hatch it on moss and wait for it to grow up.
- Let it dig: sniffers periodically unearth ancient seeds - pitcher pods among them, alongside torchflower seeds.
- Plant the pitcher pod on farmland: till dirt with a hoe and plant it like any crop.
- Wait for full growth: the crop goes through several stages and ends as a two-block-tall pitcher plant.
- Harvest carefully: breaking a fully grown crop drops one pitcher plant - and unlike other tall flowers, bone meal cannot duplicate it.
- Craft cyan dye: each pitcher plant crafts into two cyan dye - a rare renewable source of that color.
- Decorate big: pitcher plants are among the tallest flowers in the game and cannot go in flower pots, so give them open ground.
- Compost the extras: a pitcher plant has an 85% chance of raising the composter level - and bees will pollinate placed pitcher plants.
Java vs Bedrock
Growth and harvesting work the same in Java and Bedrock. One quirk: bees see player-placed pitcher plants as flowers but ignore fully grown pitcher crops still in the ground.
Versions: Added in 1.20 Trails & Tales (23w12a) with the sniffer and the archaeology system. The cyan dye yield was tuned to two units shortly after release on both editions.
Frequently asked questions
How do you get pitcher pods in Minecraft?
From a sniffer's digging: adult sniffers periodically unearth pitcher pods and torchflower seeds. Hatch your first sniffer from an egg brushed out of suspicious sand in warm ocean ruins.
Can you duplicate pitcher plants in Minecraft?
No - bone meal does not duplicate pitcher plants, unlike other tall flowers. Every plant comes from a pitcher pod grown on farmland, so a sniffer farm is the only renewable source.
What is the pitcher plant used for in Minecraft?
Two cyan dye per plant, tall garden decoration, bee pollination and composting (85% chance). It cannot be placed in a flower pot.
