How to Get a Spyglass in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 1 amethyst shard (amethyst geode)
- 2 copper ingots (smelted raw copper)
- Crafting table
Step by step
- Get an amethyst shard: mine fully grown amethyst clusters inside an amethyst geode with any pickaxe (Fortune increases drops).
- Get 2 copper ingots: smelt raw copper from copper ore, common in dripstone caves and around Y=48.
- Craft vertically: amethyst shard in the top slot, then copper ingot, then copper ingot below it.
- Use it from your hotbar: hold use to zoom to 1/10 of your FOV (7 degrees at the Java default of 70).
- Combine with a high render distance or a tall tower to scout ocean monuments, villages and bastions from far away.
Java vs Bedrock
The default zoom differs slightly because default FOV differs: 7 degrees in Java (from 70) and 6 degrees in Bedrock (from 60). Crafting and behavior are otherwise identical.
Versions: Spyglasses exist since 1.17 (Caves & Cliffs Part 1). Amethyst geodes generate in every overworld chunk region, so there is always one within a reasonable walk.
Frequently asked questions
What does a spyglass do in Minecraft?
It narrows your field of view to one tenth of normal, acting like a telescope. A square vignette appears while scoping, and you move slower, so it is for scouting, not fighting.
Can you enchant a spyglass?
No. The spyglass has no durability and no enchantments; it works forever once crafted.
Where do I find amethyst for a spyglass?
In amethyst geodes: round structures underground (and sometimes exposed in oceans) with smooth basalt, calcite and amethyst blocks. Only fully grown clusters drop shards; the budding amethyst block itself cannot be moved.
