How to Get a Turtle Shell in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 5 turtle scutes
- Seagrass (breeding and growth)
- Shears (to collect seagrass)
- Fences and torches (to protect the eggs)
Step by step
- Find turtles on beach biomes and gather seagrass with shears underwater.
- Feed seagrass to two turtles. The pregnant turtle returns to her home beach and lays a clutch of up to 4 eggs in the sand.
- Protect the eggs: they only hatch on sand, red sand or suspicious sand, crack 3 times mostly at night over about 4-5 in-game days, and zombies deliberately trample them - fence the area and light it up.
- When a baby turtle grows into an adult (about 20 minutes; each seagrass you feed it removes 10% of the remaining time), it drops exactly 1 turtle scute.
- Collect 5 scutes and craft the shell: 3 scutes across the top row of the grid and 1 on each side of the middle row, like any helmet.
- Wear it for 2 armor points (same as an iron helmet, with higher durability) plus 10 seconds of Water Breathing every time you enter water - the air refills on any contact with air. You can also brew the shell into a Potion of the Turtle Master.
Java vs Bedrock
Same mechanics in Java and Bedrock. The shell has 275 durability in Java and 276 in Bedrock, gives 2 armor points in both, and the 10-second Water Breathing recharge works the same way.
Versions: Turtle shells were added in the Update Aquatic: Java 1.13 (18w07a) and Bedrock 1.5.0 (beta 1.5.0.4). Since 1.20 they can also be customized with armor trims at a smithing table.
Frequently asked questions
Is the turtle shell better than an iron helmet?
Same 2 armor points, but higher durability and the built-in Water Breathing effect, which refills instantly in air. For ocean monuments and long dives it beats iron easily; netherite still wins on raw protection.
Can I get scutes any other way?
No - a turtle scute drops only when a baby turtle matures. Killing turtles never drops scutes, so farming shells means breeding, not hunting.
How do I repair a turtle shell?
Combine two damaged shells in a crafting grid or an anvil. Keeping a breeding colony running makes replacement cheap anyway.
Can I pause a baby turtle's growth?
Yes - feeding a golden dandelion to a baby turtle stops it from aging, and feeding another resumes it (a 26.x feature).
