How to Get Wind Burst in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Wind Burst only drops from ominous vaults in trial chambers: open them with ominous trial keys and each has a 5.5% chance to eject a Wind Burst I enchanted book. Combine books on an anvil for levels II and III, apply to a mace, and every smash attack launches you back into the air.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Get a mace first: heavy core + breeze rod. Wind Burst only goes on maces, and our heavy core guide covers the same ominous vaults you'll be farming.
  2. Trigger ominous trials: drink an ominous bottle (raid captains drop them) near trial spawners so they turn ominous, then complete them for ominous trial keys.
  3. Find ominous vaults: the skull-faced vaults hidden in the harder corners of trial chambers.
  4. Open and repeat: each ominous vault has a 5.5% chance to eject a Wind Burst I book - it's always level I, so expect many vaults before you see one.
  5. Combine for higher levels: anvil two Wind Burst I books (or a book and your mace) for II, and again for III. Launch power grows from ~8 blocks at I to ~16 at II and ~24 at III.
  6. Fight with it: land a smash attack (fall more than 1.5 blocks before hitting) and Wind Burst launches you upward to chain the next smash. Jump off a single block or use a wind charge to start the loop - and note it doesn't cancel fall damage like a wind charge does.

Java vs Bedrock

Wind Burst is the same 5.5% ominous-vault book in both editions, but the counters differ: in Java, Blast Protection reduces the launch, while in Bedrock it's netherite armor that dampens it. Java's slower mace attack speed also makes chaining fully charged smashes at Wind Burst I impossible against a stationary target - higher levels fix the rhythm.

Versions: Added experimentally in Java 1.20.5 and officially with 1.21, and in Bedrock 1.21.0 (Tricky Trials, June 2024). Early snapshots let it trigger off ground attacks and briefly negate fall damage - both were changed before release.

Frequently asked questions

Where do you get Wind Burst?

Only from ominous vaults in trial chambers: a 5.5% chance per vault for a Wind Burst I enchanted book. It's not on the enchanting table, in trades, or anywhere else.

How do you get Wind Burst III?

Books only drop at level I, so combine them on an anvil: two I books make II, and combining again makes III. Expect to open a lot of ominous vaults.

What does Wind Burst do on a mace?

Landing a smash attack (falling 1.5+ blocks before the hit) launches you upward - about 8 blocks at level I, 16 at II and 24 at III - so you can chain smash attacks continuously.

Does Wind Burst stop fall damage?

No - unlike wind charges, Wind Burst doesn't cancel your fall damage. A successful mace smash negates the fall damage of that attack as usual, but the launch itself won't save you from a bad landing.
