How to Get Wind Charges in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft them: 1 breeze rod makes 4 wind charges. Breeze rods come from breezes, the jumping mobs from trial chambers spawners (1-2 rods per kill, more with Looting). Wind charges also drop from vaults and ominous vaults in trial chambers.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Find a trial chamber: these copper-and-tuff structures generate underground in the Overworld - our finder guide covers the fastest ways to locate one.
  2. Locate a breeze spawner: breezes only spawn from trial spawners ringed by chiseled tuff in combat chambers (never corridors), one per chamber.
  3. Farm breeze rods: each breeze drops 1-2 breeze rods when killed by a player, and Looting raises the haul. Breezes deflect every projectile except wind charges, so go in with melee.
  4. Craft the charges: place 1 breeze rod in the crafting grid for 4 wind charges. Shapeless, no table needed.
  5. Loot them too: vaults and ominous vaults in trial chambers can eject wind charges directly - free ammo while you farm rods.
  6. Throw and bounce: a wind charge bursts on impact, dealing 1 damage and heavy knockback. Throw one at your feet mid-jump to launch yourself - you only take fall damage below the height where the burst hit you.
  7. Use the tricks: wind charges flip non-iron doors, trapdoors, fence gates, buttons and levers, ring bells, snuff candles, break chorus flowers and shatter decorated pots. You can even deflect them mid-flight with a melee swing, like ghast fireballs.
  8. Watch the cooldown: 0.5 seconds between throws, shown as a white overlay on the item.

Java vs Bedrock

Player and dispenser shots knock back 22% harder than breeze shots but burst in a smaller 2.4-block sphere (breeze shots: 6 blocks). In Bedrock a wind charge that passes through fire or lava sets hit entities alight, and the thrown projectile has a slight offset. Both editions share the same 0.5-second throw cooldown.

Versions: Wind charges arrived as experimental content in Java 1.20.3 / Bedrock 1.20.60 and became official with 1.21 (Tricky Trials, June 2024). Early snapshots had breezes drop them directly; the breeze rod crafting recipe replaced that before release.

Frequently asked questions

How do you craft wind charges?

Put 1 breeze rod anywhere in a crafting grid - it makes 4 wind charges. Breeze rods drop from breezes in trial chambers (1-2 per kill, more with Looting).

Do wind charges hurt you?

A direct hit deals 1 damage plus knockback. The trick is fall damage: after a burst launches you, you only accumulate fall damage below the height where the burst hit - so you can rocket-jump safely if you land high enough.

What can wind charges activate?

Non-iron doors and trapdoors, fence gates, buttons and levers all flip; bells ring, candles go out, chorus flowers break and decorated pots shatter. They also bounce back if you hit them with a melee attack or another projectile.

Where else do wind charges drop?

Vaults and ominous vaults in trial chambers can eject them as loot, so opening vaults while farming breeze rods builds your stack faster.

What do wind charges do in Minecraft?

They create a wind burst on impact: entities get knocked back and take 1 damage on direct hits, and redstone-weak blocks like buttons, levers, fence gates and non-iron doors flip state. Players use them for movement: a blast at your feet launches you upward and resets fall damage.

Do wind charges hurt the player?

The knockback affects you too, but fall damage only applies after the burst resets your fall distance. Land the timing right and you take no fall damage at all from huge drops, which is the core of wind charge movement tech.

How many wind charges does a breeze rod make?

Four per breeze rod. Each breeze drops 1-2 rods (up to more with Looting), so one breeze is worth 4-8 wind charges.
