How to Grow Glow Berries in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- At least 1 glow berry (from lush caves)
- Any solid block to hang the vine from
- Bone meal for instant berries
Step by step
- Get starter glow berries from lush caves (harvest with the use button - no need to break the vine) or from our glow berries guide's other sources.
- Plant them on the bottom face of any full solid block. They grow downward one block at a time, no light or water requirements.
- Wait for growth: each random tick has a 10% chance to extend the vine (about 11 minutes per block on average), and each NEWLY grown block has an 11% chance to bear berries.
- Skip the waiting: use bone meal on any block of the vine and it sprouts berries instantly. This is the core of every glow berry farm.
- Harvest with the use button so the vine stays and keeps producing; breaking the vine only drops a berry if that segment had one, and Fortune does not help.
- Use shears on the bottom tip to stop a vine at the exact length you want - perfect for lighting designs, since berry-bearing vines glow at light level 14.
- Extra uses: feed two foxes glow berries to breed them, compost them at a 30% fill chance, or eat them in a pinch (2 hunger points).
Java vs Bedrock
Growth and bone meal mechanics are identical in both editions. Eating one restores 2 hunger; saturation differs slightly (0.4 Java, 1.2 Bedrock).
Versions: Glow berries were added in Java 1.17 and Bedrock 1.17.0 (Caves & Cliffs Part I, 2021); lush caves started generating naturally in 1.18.
Frequently asked questions
Do existing cave vines grow berries over time?
No - only newly grown vine blocks can spawn with berries (11% chance each). An old bare vine stays bare forever unless you use bone meal on it.
What is the fastest glow berry farm?
A row of long vines plus bone meal. Each bone meal on any segment makes that segment produce a berry instantly, so one long vine turns a bone meal supply into a berry supply.
Do cave vines give off light?
Yes - any vine segment carrying glow berries emits light level 14, as bright as a torch, which is why they double as cave lighting.
