Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 1 plank of any wood type (wooden button)
- or 1 stone block (stone button)
Step by step
- Turn 1 log into planks (wooden button) or smelt cobblestone into stone (stone button).
- Open the crafting table or your 2x2 inventory grid.
- Place 1 plank or 1 stone block in any slot.
- Take the button.
- Place it on the top, side, or bottom of a block next to what you want to power, and press it.
- A wooden button pulses for 1.5 seconds, a stone button for 1 second.
Java vs Bedrock
The button recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock and could not be cheaper: one block, no stick. Wooden buttons can also be triggered by arrows and tridents stuck in them, which makes them the target for remote door openers; stone buttons only respond to a player press. Polished blackstone works as a stone variant. Buttons break instantly with any tool and pop off if their support block is removed.

Frequently asked questions
Button vs lever in Minecraft: which should I use?
Use a button for momentary triggers like doors and dispensers; it turns itself off after a second. Use a lever when you want a machine to stay on until you switch it back.
Can arrows press a button in Minecraft?
Yes, but only wooden buttons. An arrow or trident stuck in a wooden button holds it pressed until the projectile despawns. Stone and polished blackstone buttons ignore projectiles.
How long does a button stay pressed?
A stone button pulses for 1 second (10 redstone ticks) and a wooden button for 1.5 seconds (15 redstone ticks). An arrow in a wooden button keeps it on for the arrow's lifetime.
How do you open an iron door with a button?
Iron doors only open with redstone power. Place a button on the block next to the door and press it; the door opens for the pulse and closes on its own.
