How to Make a Lever in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 1 stick
- 1 cobblestone
Step by step
- Craft 1 stick from planks.
- Mine 1 cobblestone.
- Open the crafting table or your 2x2 inventory grid.
- Place the stick in the slot directly above the cobblestone.
- Take the lever.
- Place it on the top, side, or bottom of a solid block and right-click to flip it; it powers the block it sits on and everything touching it.
Java vs Bedrock
The lever recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock. Unlike buttons, levers stay on until you flick them back, which makes them the standard switch for doors, lights, and farms. A lever also locks hoppers it powers, which is how manual overrides on sorting systems work. In Java you can waterlog a lever, handy for underwater bases.

Frequently asked questions
What does a lever do in Minecraft?
It is a manual redstone switch that stays in the on or off position. It powers the block it is attached to and all adjacent redstone components, running doors, pistons, lamps, and machines.
Lever vs button: what is the difference?
A lever holds its state until flipped again; a button pulses briefly and turns itself off (1 second for stone, 1.5 for wood). Use levers for toggles, buttons for momentary triggers.
Why does my lever stop my hopper from working?
That is normal redstone behavior: a powered hopper locks and stops moving items. Your lever is powering the hopper through the block it sits on; move the lever or use it deliberately as an on-off switch for the farm.
Can a lever be placed on any block?
On the top, side, or bottom of most solid blocks. It cannot attach to non-solid blocks like glass or glowstone in Java.
