How to Make a Tripwire Hook in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 1 iron ingot
- 1 stick
- 1 plank of any type
Step by step
- Smelt 1 iron ingot.
- Craft 1 stick and 1 plank of any wood type.
- Open the crafting table.
- Place the iron ingot in the top-center, the stick in the center, and the plank in the bottom-center.
- Take the 2 tripwire hooks.
- Mount the hooks on opposite blocks facing each other, then lay string in a straight line between them (up to 40 blocks). The string must sit on the hooks to arm the trap.
Java vs Bedrock
The tripwire hook recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock and gives 2 hooks per craft. A valid tripwire circuit needs two hooks and 1 to 40 string in a straight horizontal line; entities crossing or breaking the string fire both hooks. Shears disarm tripwire silently (breaking string with shears does not trigger it), which is why you carry them into jungle temples and pillager outposts.

Frequently asked questions
How do you set up a tripwire in Minecraft?
Place two tripwire hooks on blocks facing each other, then lay string in a straight line between them, up to 40 blocks long. When the string shows connected on both hooks, anything passing through triggers the signal.
How do you disarm a tripwire without setting it off?
Break the string with shears. Any other tool (or walking through it) triggers the hooks. This matters in jungle temples, where the tripwire fires dispensers loaded with arrows.
What are tripwire hooks used for?
Perimeter alarms, hidden traps, automatic doors, item-count filters, and string duplication farms. Paired with dispensers or note blocks they make classic entry alerts.
Does string have to touch the tripwire hooks?
Yes. String not connected to a hook does nothing. Lay the line so it starts on one hook and ends on the other; valid string shows a small raised connection at each hook.
