How to Make a Fence in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft 3 wooden fences with 4 matching planks and 2 sticks: planks in the left and right slots of the middle and bottom rows, sticks down the center. Fences are 1.5 blocks tall, so mobs and players cannot jump over them.

What you need

4 matching planks (any wood)
2 sticks
Makes 3 fences

Step by step

Turn logs into 4 matching planks of one wood type.
Craft 2 sticks from planks.
Open a crafting table.
Place planks in the left and right slots of the middle row and the bottom row.
Place the 2 sticks in the center slots of those rows (a vertical stick line).
Take the 3 fences and place them in a line: they connect into a continuous barrier.

Java vs Bedrock

The wooden fence recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock, and Nether wood types make crimson and warped fences that do not burn. A nether brick fence uses 4 nether brick blocks plus 2 nether bricks and yields 6. A fence looks one block tall but its collision box is 1.5 blocks, so players and most mobs cannot jump it while you can still see over it. Leashed animals tie to fences, carpets can be placed on top so only you can hop across, and fences join automatically with fence gates.

Frequently asked questions

Can mobs jump over fences in Minecraft?

No. The fence collision box is 1.5 blocks high, higher than any standard jump, so cows, sheep, zombies and players are all stopped. Spiders can climb over, and a horse with a good jump stat can clear it, so cover animal pens or add a second layer.

How do you get animals into a fence pen?

Use a fence gate, or place a carpet on top of a fence: you can jump onto the carpet and over, but animals cannot. Leads also work to pull animals in before you close the gap.

Do fences connect to walls?

Wooden fences connect to each other and to fence gates, but not to solid blocks: a small post forms at the junction. Walls (cobblestone walls) connect to solid blocks and glass panes instead, so many builders mix both.
