How to Make a Fishing Rod in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

What you need

• 3 sticks
• 2 string

Step by step

1. Craft the fishing rod: 3 sticks in a diagonal from bottom-left to top-right, and 2 string in the right column, below the top stick.
2. Cast it into water. After a short wait a stream of bubbles approaches the bobber.
3. Reel in once the bubbles reach the bobber (it bites) to get a fish, junk or possibly a treasure item.
4. Enchant it: Lure shortens the wait (max III), Luck of the Sea increases fishing luck (max III), Unbreaking (max III) and Mending (anvil only) help it last.
5. Hook entities: the rod can hook mobs, players and (Java only) items, and reeling in drags them toward you without damage. Reeling in a mob costs 5 durability, an item 3. The maximum bobber distance is 33 blocks.
6. Make a carrot on a stick or warped fungus on a stick by crafting a fishing rod with a carrot or warped fungus; the rod must be diagonally above it. At zero durability they turn back into a fishing rod.
7. Find one instead: fishing (0.2% unenchanted, 0.8% enchanted per attempt), drowned drops, abandoned camp chests, ocean ruins chests, or buy an enchanted one from a journeyman fisherman.

Java vs Bedrock

Durability is 64 in Java and 385 in Bedrock. Java can hook item entities. In Bedrock a bobber cast with flaming gear can set hooked entities on fire. Drowned drop the rod 8.5% of the time in Java and 25% in Bedrock.
