How to Make a Hoe in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 2 of one material (planks, cobblestone, copper, iron, gold or diamonds)
- 2 sticks
Step by step
- Craft 2 sticks from planks.
- Get 2 of your material: planks, cobblestone, copper, iron, gold or diamonds.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place the 2 material pieces in the top-left and top-middle slots.
- Place 2 sticks down the center column.
- Take the hoe. Right-click dirt or grass blocks to till them into farmland, then plant seeds; keep water within 4 blocks so the farmland stays hydrated.
Java vs Bedrock
The hoe recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock for all tiers, and netherite hoes come from the smithing table. Since the Village and Pillage update the hoe is also the fastest tool for breaking leaves, hay bales, sponges, moss and all sculk blocks, so miners carry one into ancient cities. Tilled farmland reverts to dirt if it dries out or if a mob jumps on it, so fence your fields and keep water nearby. The 'Serious Dedication' advancement asks you to craft a netherite hoe, the classic joke milestone of every survival world.

Frequently asked questions
How do you farm in Minecraft?
Craft a hoe, right-click dirt or grass near water (within 4 blocks) to make farmland, and plant seeds, carrots, potatoes or beetroot. Farmland within 4 blocks of water stays dark and hydrated, and crops grow fastest in rows with light level 9+.
What is the hoe good for besides farming?
Breaking certain blocks fast: leaves, hay bales, sponges, moss blocks, shroomlights and every sculk block break quickest with a hoe. For ancient city looting, a diamond hoe is the meta tool.
Does farmland need water?
Dry farmland works but hydrates nothing: crops grow far slower and the block reverts to dirt if trampled. One water block hydrates a 9x9 square of farmland centered on it.
