How to Make a Piston Door

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: The classic 2x2 flush piston door uses 4 sticky pistons (two per side, facing inward) that pull 2 wall blocks aside when you step on pressure plates. Wire each pair with redstone and a torch tower so one input fires all four pistons, and the wall melts away in front of you.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Gather the parts. 4 sticky pistons (piston + slimeball each), redstone dust, 2 redstone torches, 4 pressure plates (or buttons), and the wall blocks you want the door to blend into.
  2. Place the pistons. Dig a 2-wide, 2-tall doorway in your wall. On each side, place 2 sticky pistons one block behind the doorway, facing inward - one at floor level, one above it.
  3. Set the door blocks. Put your wall blocks directly in front of each piston head, filling the 2x2 opening. When the pistons retract, they pull these blocks back and the doorway opens.
  4. Wire one side. Run dust from each piston down to a central point and up a torch tower: a redstone torch under the block holding the lower piston's circuit inverts the signal so the door stays closed by default.
  5. Add the pressure plates. Place 2 plates inside and 2 outside the door and connect them to the torch tower input. Step on any plate - power kills the torch, all four pistons retract together, and the door opens. Walk through and it closes behind you.

Java vs Bedrock

The classic 2x2 design works identically in Java and Bedrock. Bigger doors (3x3, 4x4, seamless) rely on Java-only behaviors like quasi-connectivity and piston spitting, so follow an edition-specific tutorial for those.

Versions: Pistons were added in Beta 1.7 (2011) and sticky pistons in Beta 1.8 - the 2x2 door design appeared within days and is still the most-built redstone contraption in the game.

Frequently asked questions

Why does only one side of my door open?

The two sides aren't wired to the same input. Run both piston pairs to the single torch tower so one pressure plate signal reaches all four pistons at once.

The door opens but doesn't close. What happened?

A missing torch inversion: the pistons should be powered OFF by the torch when nobody is on the plate. Check the torch tower - a broken or misplaced torch leaves the door stuck open.

Can I hide it completely?

Yes - use the same block as your wall for the door blocks, bury the wiring under the floor, and cover the plates with carpet... no wait, plates can't be covered. Hide them in the doorway itself; that's the standard trade-off.
