How to Make Your Own Minecraft Skin
Guide Java Bedrock
Quick answer: Draw or edit a 64x64 PNG in a free skin editor (Blockbench, The Skindex, NameMC), then upload it: Java via the launcher (Skins tab) or minecraft.net profile, Bedrock via the dressing room. Choose the Classic (4px arms) or Slim (3px arms) model.
What you need
- A free skin editor: Blockbench, The Skindex or NameMC editor
- Java: launcher or minecraft.net profile access
- Bedrock: the in-game dressing room
Step by step
- Start from the default Steve or Alex template, or edit any skin you like. Skin editors show a 3D preview while you paint the 2D layout.
- The file is a tiny 64x64 PNG: head, torso, arms and legs each get fixed regions. The second layer (hat/jacket areas) adds depth.
- Pick your model: Classic has 4-pixel arms, Slim (Alex) has 3-pixel arms. Uploading to the wrong model distorts the arms.
- Free editors: Blockbench (desktop-grade, free), The Skindex and NameMC (browser editors, also free). No payment or account needed to draw.
- Java upload: Minecraft Launcher > Skins tab > New Skin, or minecraft.net > your profile > Change Skin. Pick the model and upload the PNG.
- Bedrock: open the dressing room (Profile > Edit Character) and import your own PNG, or build one from the free body parts there.
- Skins are account-wide on Java; servers see your skin as soon as you upload it.
Java vs Bedrock
Java skins upload through the launcher or minecraft.net. Bedrock skins live in the dressing room and also support marketplace items - but your own PNGs are always free.
Versions: The 64x64 skin format has been stable for years and works in all current versions. Very old skins (64x32) still load but miss the second layer.
Frequently asked questions
Is making a skin free?
Yes - editors like Blockbench, The Skindex and NameMC are free, and uploading your own PNG costs nothing on both editions.
Why do my skin's arms look wrong?
You uploaded with the wrong model. If the skin was drawn for Slim (3px arms), choose Slim at upload - and the other way around.
