How to Make a Smithing Table in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 2 iron ingots
- 4 planks (any wood)
Step by step
- Smelt iron ore into 2 iron ingots (or loot them from chests).
- Turn logs into 4 planks of any wood type.
- Open a crafting table.
- Place 1 iron ingot in the top-left slot and 1 in the top-middle slot.
- Place 2 planks in the middle-left and middle-center slots, and 2 planks in the bottom-left and bottom-center slots (a 2x2 square under the ingots).
- Take the smithing table. Use it to upgrade diamond gear to netherite, apply armor trims, or give a villager the toolsmith job.
Java vs Bedrock
The smithing table recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock. Since 1.20 in both editions, upgrading diamond gear to netherite also requires a Netherite Upgrade smithing template from bastion remnants, and the table applies armor trim templates with materials like gold or amethyst. It is the toolsmith's job site block, and it also generates naturally in trail ruins. Break it with an axe for the fastest pickup.

Frequently asked questions
What is a smithing table used for in Minecraft?
Three things: upgrading diamond tools, weapons and armor to netherite, applying armor trims for decoration, and assigning the toolsmith profession to an unemployed villager.
Do you need a smithing template to use a smithing table?
Yes, since the 1.20 update. Netherite upgrades need a Netherite Upgrade template found in bastion remnants, and each armor trim needs its own trim template. The template goes in the left slot, the gear in the middle, and the material on the right.
Does upgrading to netherite keep enchantments?
Yes. The smithing table keeps all enchantments, the custom name, durability lost and any armor trim, and it costs no experience, unlike an anvil.
