How to Make Diamond Armor in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: A full diamond set costs 24 diamonds: helmet 5, chestplate 8, leggings 7, boots 4. It gives 20 armor points and 8 armor toughness - the best craftable protection before you smith it into netherite.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Mine 24 diamonds: diamond ore generates below Y=16 and is most common around Y=-59. Use an iron pickaxe or better, and a Fortune III pickaxe multiplies the haul.
  2. Open a crafting table. Every armor piece follows the same idea - fill the outline of that piece with diamonds.
  3. Helmet (5 diamonds): fill the top row and the middle-left and middle-right slots.
  4. Chestplate (8 diamonds): fill every slot except the top-center.
  5. Leggings (7 diamonds): fill the top row, then both outer columns of the middle and bottom rows.
  6. Boots (4 diamonds): fill the middle-left and middle-right, and bottom-left and bottom-right slots.
  7. Check the stats: full diamond gives 20 armor points and 8 armor toughness. Per piece (Java durability) - helmet 3 armor / 363, chestplate 8 / 528, leggings 6 / 495, boots 3 / 429. Each piece has 2 toughness.
  8. Enchant it: Protection IV on every piece is the classic setup; add Mending and Unbreaking III on an anvil so the set lasts forever.
  9. Upgrade to netherite: smithing table + netherite upgrade template + 1 netherite ingot per piece keeps every enchantment and raises armor toughness from 2 to 3 per piece, plus 1 knockback resistance.
  10. No diamonds? Armorer villagers sell diamond armor pieces for emeralds at expert and master level, and end city chests can hold enchanted diamond armor.

Java vs Bedrock

Recipes and armor points are the same in Java and Bedrock. Durability is one point higher in Bedrock on every piece (for example the chestplate has 528 in Java and 529 in Bedrock). Diamond armor has enchantability 10, against 9 for iron.

Frequently asked questions

How many diamonds do you need for a full set of diamond armor?

24 diamonds: 5 for the helmet, 8 for the chestplate, 7 for the leggings and 4 for the boots. Add 4 more if you want to upgrade the whole set to netherite (one netherite ingot per piece, not diamonds).

What is the diamond chestplate recipe?

8 diamonds filling every slot of the crafting grid except the top-center one. It is the single most expensive piece of the set.

Is diamond armor better than iron armor?

Yes: diamond gives 20 armor points and 8 armor toughness versus iron's 15 armor points and no toughness, and it lasts longer - the chestplate has 528 durability in Java against iron's 240.

Can villagers sell diamond armor?

Yes. Armorers sell enchanted diamond armor for emeralds: boots and leggings at Expert level, helmet and chestplate at Master level. That makes a trading hall a real alternative to mining 24 diamonds.
