Step by step

  1. Mine 3 diamonds: diamond ore below Y=16, best around Y=-59, iron pickaxe or better.
  2. Get 2 sticks: 2 planks = 4 sticks.
  3. Craft it: put two diamonds in the top row (left and center), a third diamond below the left one, then a stick below the top-center diamond and another stick below that. The mirror image works too.
  4. Chop everything: axes are the fastest tool for every wooden block, from logs to crafting tables to chests. Efficiency V turns a forest into kindling.
  5. Fight with it: 9 attack damage per swing, more than a diamond sword's 7. In Java its attack speed is 1.0, against the sword's 1.6, so it hits harder but swings slower.
  6. Use the tricks: right-click a log to strip it for builds, right-click oxidized copper to scrape it back, right-click waxed copper to de-wax it.
  7. Break shields: attacking a player who is blocking with an axe disables their shield for 5 seconds.
  8. Enchant and upgrade: Efficiency, Fortune (more saplings and apples from leaves), Silk Touch (whole bookshelves and bee nests), Unbreaking and Mending - then smith it into netherite, keeping the enchantments.
