How to Make Glazed Terracotta in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
Quick answer: Smelt colored terracotta in a furnace with fuel to make glazed terracotta of the same color. Plain, undyed terracotta will not work. Dye plain terracotta first by surrounding one dye with eight terracotta in a crafting table.
What you need
- Colored terracotta
- Furnace and fuel
- 8 plain terracotta + 1 dye for 8 colored blocks (optional)
- Any pickaxe
Step by step
- Get plain terracotta or a colored terracotta block.
- If it is plain, arrange eight terracotta around one dye in the center of a crafting table. Take eight colored terracotta of that color.
- Put colored terracotta in a furnace with fuel. Each block gives one glazed terracotta of the same color.
- Place the glazed blocks while facing different directions to rotate the pattern. Test four blocks in a 2x2 area to find a matching design.
- If the pattern is wrong, mine the block with any pickaxe and place it again from a different direction.
- For piston builds, remember that glazed terracotta can be pushed but cannot be pulled by sticky pistons. It also does not stick to slime or honey blocks.
Java vs Bedrock
The dye-and-smelt route works in Java and Bedrock. A block of clay smelts into plain terracotta, not glazed terracotta: you still need the dye step before glazing. Placement direction controls the pattern orientation.

Frequently asked questions
Why will my terracotta not smelt?
Glazing requires colored terracotta. Plain terracotta is not a valid input for this step.
Can I make glazed terracotta in a stonecutter?
No. Smelt colored terracotta in a furnace with fuel.
Can sticky pistons pull glazed terracotta?
No. Pistons can push it, but sticky pistons cannot pull it. It does not adhere to slime or honey blocks.
