How to Make a Furnace in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft a furnace from cobblestone or any other stone-tier block. Put fuel in the bottom slot and the item to process in the top slot. It smelts one item every 10 seconds (200 game ticks) and gives off light level 13 while active.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Craft the furnace: 8 cobblestone (or any other stone-tier block) in a ring, leaving the center empty. Cobblestone variants can be mixed.
  2. Open it and put fuel in the bottom slot (up to one stack) and the items to process in the top slot (up to one stack).
  3. It processes one item every 200 game ticks (10 seconds), or six items a minute.
  4. Fuel is used up one unit at a time and keeps burning until fully used even if the top slot empties. For example, a piece of coal burns for 80 seconds and processes eight items.
  5. Collect the result from the output slot.
  6. Upgrade later: a blast furnace is crafted from an iron ingot, a furnace and smooth stone.
  7. Find one: furnaces generate in plains and desert village weaponsmiths, some snowy village houses, ancient cities, trail ruins, and one in every igloo.
  8. Pick it up with any pickaxe. Without a pickaxe it does not drop itself. Breaking it drops its contents.

Java vs Bedrock

In Java, pistons cannot push furnaces. Some structure generation (such as one taiga village house) differs by edition.

Versions: Describes the current Java and Bedrock releases. See the edition note above for differences.
