How to Make a Smoker in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft a smoker with a furnace surrounded by 4 of any logs, wood or stems (top, bottom, left and right). It cooks food twice as fast as a regular furnace and doubles as the butcher villager's job site block.

What you need

1 furnace (8 cobblestone)
4 of any logs, wood, stripped logs, stems or hyphae
Fuel: coal, charcoal, lava buckets or blaze rods

Step by step

Craft a regular furnace first: 8 cobblestone (or blackstone/cobbled deepslate) in a ring on the crafting table.
Gather 4 logs of any type. Stripped logs, wood, hyphae and stems all work too, in any mix.
Open the crafting table and place the furnace in the center slot.
Place the 4 logs directly above, below, left and right of the furnace.
Take the smoker from the output slot.
Place it down and use it like a furnace, but only for food: meat, fish, potatoes and kelp. It cooks each item twice as fast as a normal furnace.
Note the limits: a smoker cannot smelt ores, stone or sand, and it burns fuel at double rate since it cooks at double speed.

Java vs Bedrock

The smoker works the same in Java and Bedrock and was added in 1.14. It cooks food twice as fast as a furnace but accepts only food items. Placing one near an unemployed villager turns them into a butcher, whose trades include cooked meats and stew.

Frequently asked questions

What does a smoker do in Minecraft?

It cooks food items twice as fast as a regular furnace. Raw beef, porkchops, chicken, fish, potatoes and kelp all work. Ores and other smeltables do not go in a smoker.

Is a smoker faster than a furnace?

Yes, exactly twice as fast for food: each item cooks in 5 seconds instead of 10. It also consumes fuel twice as fast per second, so the items-per-fuel ratio stays the same.

What villager uses a smoker?

The butcher. An unemployed villager who claims a smoker becomes a butcher, selling cooked meats, rabbit stew and dried kelp blocks, and buying raw meat and coal.
