How to Make a Grindstone in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 2 sticks
- 1 stone slab (from 3 stone)
- 2 planks of any type
Step by step
- Gather 2 sticks from planks, 2 planks of any type and 1 stone slab (3 stone in a row crafts 6 slabs).
- Open the crafting table.
- Place 1 stick in the top-left and 1 stick in the top-right slots.
- Place the stone slab in the top-middle slot, between the two sticks.
- Place the 2 planks in the middle-left and middle-right slots, directly under the sticks.
- Take the grindstone. Place it anywhere; in Java it even works floating with no supporting block.
- Use it two ways: put one enchanted item in to strip its enchantments for XP, or two damaged items of the same type to merge them into one repaired item.
Java vs Bedrock
The grindstone works the same in Java and Bedrock and was added in 1.14. Disenchanting wipes all non-curse enchantments and returns experience based on them, which makes grindstones the core of enchantment rerolling. Curses like Curse of Binding stay on the item. A villager claiming a grindstone becomes a weaponsmith.

Frequently asked questions
What does a grindstone do in Minecraft?
Two things: it removes enchantments from an item and gives you experience back, and it repairs two damaged items of the same type by merging them. It also resets the anvil repair penalty.
Do you get XP back from a grindstone?
Yes. Disenchanting an item returns experience based on the enchantments removed. Curses cannot be removed, so Curse of Binding and Curse of Vanishing stay.
What villager uses a grindstone?
The weaponsmith. An unemployed villager claiming a grindstone becomes a weaponsmith, selling iron and diamond swords and axes, and buying coal, iron and flint.
