How to Make a Blast Furnace in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 1 furnace (8 cobblestone)
- 5 iron ingots
- 3 smooth stone (smelted cobblestone)
- Fuel: coal, charcoal, lava buckets or blaze rods
Step by step
- Craft a regular furnace: 8 cobblestone (or blackstone/cobbled deepslate) in a ring.
- Smelt 3 cobblestone into smooth stone in that furnace.
- Gather 5 iron ingots.
- Open the crafting table: place the 5 iron ingots across the top row and in the middle-left and middle-right slots.
- Put the furnace in the center slot and the 3 smooth stone across the bottom row.
- Take the blast furnace. It smelts ores, raw metals, ancient debris and metal tools or armor twice as fast as a normal furnace.
- Note the limits: it cannot cook food or smelt stone-type blocks, and it burns fuel at double rate for double speed.
Java vs Bedrock
The blast furnace works the same in Java and Bedrock and was added in 1.14. It is the fast way to smelt ancient debris into netherite scrap and to recycle iron and gold gear into nuggets. An unemployed villager who claims one becomes an armorer, selling armor pieces up to diamond at master level.

Frequently asked questions
What does a blast furnace do in Minecraft?
It smelts ores, raw metals, ancient debris and iron or gold tools and armor twice as fast as a regular furnace. It cannot cook food or smelt non-metal blocks.
Is a blast furnace faster than a furnace?
Yes, exactly twice as fast for metals: 5 seconds per item instead of 10. Fuel burns twice as fast too, so fuel efficiency per item is unchanged.
What villager uses a blast furnace?
The armorer. An unemployed villager claiming a blast furnace becomes an armorer, selling iron, chainmail and eventually diamond armor pieces, and buying coal, iron and lava buckets.
