How to Make Leggings in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft leggings with 7 of your material (leather, iron, gold or diamond): fill the top row completely, then the left and right slots of the middle and bottom rows, like a pair of pants.

What you need

7 of one material (leather, copper, iron ingots, gold ingots or diamonds)

Step by step

Get 7 of your material: leather, copper, iron ingots, gold ingots or diamonds.
Open a crafting table.
Fill the entire top row with 3 pieces.
Fill the left and right slots of the middle row.
Fill the left and right slots of the bottom row, leaving the bottom-center empty.
Take the leggings and equip them in your legs slot; they give the second-most armor of any piece.

Java vs Bedrock

The leggings recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock and gives up to 6 armor points with diamond, second only to the chestplate. Netherite leggings come from upgrading diamond at a smithing table. Leggings are the piece worth crafting second when materials are tight, after the chestplate. Leather pants protect you from freezing in powder snow, and enchantments like Swift Sneak (found only in ancient cities) only apply to leggings, which is why ancient-city loot runs matter for endgame movement builds.

Frequently asked questions

How many diamonds do you need for full armor?

24 diamonds: 8 for the chestplate, 7 for leggings, 5 for the helmet and 4 for boots. The same count works for iron and any other armor tier.

What does Swift Sneak do in Minecraft?

Swift Sneak III makes you move at 75% of walking speed while sneaking, up from 30%. It is a leggings-only enchantment found as books in ancient city chests, and it cannot be obtained from an enchanting table.

Do leather leggings stop freezing?

Yes. Any leather armor piece slows powder-snow freezing, and a full leather set makes you immune. Leather boots also let you walk on top of powder snow instead of sinking in.
