How to Make Mushroom Stew in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 1 bowl
- 1 red mushroom
- 1 brown mushroom
- Mooshroom (optional, infinite refills)
Step by step
- Gather one red mushroom and one brown mushroom: they grow in dark spots under trees, in swamps, in mushroom fields and all over the Nether.
- Craft a bowl from 3 planks.
- Combine the bowl and both mushrooms in the crafting grid to make mushroom stew.
- Eat it for 6 hunger and 7.2 saturation - the empty bowl comes back, ready to reuse.
- Mooshroom shortcut: use an empty bowl on any mooshroom (red or brown) to milk it for stew. It never runs out, so one mooshroom equals infinite food.
- Stews do not stack, so keep a mooshroom at your base instead of hauling bowls of stew around.
Java vs Bedrock
Same in Java and Bedrock: bowl + red + brown mushroom, 6 hunger and 7.2 saturation, and mooshroom milking gives unlimited stew in both. 26.x worlds can even swap in shelf mushrooms as one of the two mushrooms.
Versions: Mushroom stew is one of the oldest foods in Minecraft, added in Indev 0.31 (January 2010). It became renewable in 1.6 when mushrooms started spreading, and suspicious stew joined as its effect-giving cousin in 1.14.
Frequently asked questions
Is mushroom stew better than cooked food?
Per bowl it beats cooked beef on saturation (7.2 vs 12.8 over two steaks it is close), but the killer feature is the mooshroom: one cow-sized animal gives infinite stew forever, no farming or fuel needed.
Does the bowl get consumed?
No - eating the stew returns the empty bowl, and milking a mooshroom only swaps an empty bowl for a full one. You never lose bowls.
Mushroom stew or suspicious stew?
Same mushrooms and bowl, but suspicious stew adds a flower and secretly gains that flower's status effect. Plain mushroom stew is safer when you do not want surprises like Poison or Wither.
