How to Make a Recovery Compass in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft a recovery compass with 8 echo shards around a compass. After you die, it points to your exact death spot in the same dimension - the best friend of anyone who dies a lot.

What you need

Echo shard x8 (ancient city chests)
Compass x1 (4 iron + 1 redstone)
Crafting table

Step by step

Find an ancient city in the deep dark - echo shards only generate in its chests.
Collect 8 echo shards: loot ancient city chests while dodging the warden (sneak, wool, and patience).
Craft a compass first: 4 iron ingots around 1 redstone dust.
Craft the recovery compass: echo shards filling every slot except the center, compass in the middle.
Carry it when you die: the needle locks onto your last death location - follow it back to your dropped items.
Same dimension only: it points correctly only while you are in the dimension where you died. Elsewhere (or before your first death) it just spins.
No reclaiming others' deaths: the compass tracks the death of whoever holds it - it cannot find another player's death spot.
Pair it with pearls: combine the recovery compass with ender pearls or an elytra trip and corpse runs stop being scary.

Java vs Bedrock

Recipe and behavior are the same in Java and Bedrock: points to your last death in the same dimension, spins randomly otherwise.

Versions: Added in 1.19 (22w14a) with the Wild Update, alongside echo shards, ancient cities and the warden.

Frequently asked questions

How does the recovery compass work in Minecraft?

After you die, it points to the exact block where you died - but only while you are in the same dimension as the death. If you have never died or you are in another dimension, the needle spins randomly like a compass in the Nether.

Where do you get echo shards in Minecraft?

Only from chests in ancient cities, the deep dark structures guarded by the warden. Sneak on wool, break or avoid the sculk sensors and shriekers, and loot the chests.

Is the recovery compass worth it?

Yes for hardcore-adjacent play and long expeditions: dying 2000 blocks from home stops being a guessing game. Just remember it cannot cross dimensions, and it is useless until you actually die.
