How to Make Tinted Glass in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft 1 glass block with 4 amethyst shards to get 2 tinted glass: a glass variant that blocks 100% of light while staying see-through. It is the only mob-proof transparent block and, unlike normal glass, it always drops itself when broken.

What you need

1 glass block per craft (smelt sand)
4 amethyst shards per craft (amethyst geodes)
A crafting table

Step by step

Find an amethyst geode (they generate underground from Y=70 down, often exposed in caves and oceans) and mine amethyst clusters with any pickaxe - fully grown clusters drop 4 shards.
Smelt sand into glass in a furnace.
Place the glass in the center of the crafting grid with amethyst shards above, below, left and right.
Collect 2 tinted glass per craft.
Build with it: tinted glass looks like smoked glass but blocks ALL light - daylight and torchlight stop dead at the block.
Control light with it: mobs spawn in the dark space behind tinted glass just like behind any solid block, so its real uses are dark rooms you can see into or out of, hiding light sources, and mob farms with viewing windows.
Break it freely: tinted glass drops itself with any tool or bare hands - no Silk Touch needed, unlike normal glass.

Java vs Bedrock

Identical recipe and behavior in Java and Bedrock.

Versions: Tinted glass was added in 1.17 (Caves & Cliffs Part I) on both editions.

Frequently asked questions

Does tinted glass block mob spawning?

No - it blocks light, not spawning. A room behind tinted glass stays dark and mobs CAN spawn there, exactly like behind stone. That is what makes it perfect for mob-farm viewing windows and dark rooms you can still see out of.

Tinted glass vs stained glass - what is the difference?

Stained glass is colored but transparent to light; tinted glass is neutral smoked glass that blocks light entirely. Stained is decoration, tinted is a light-control tool.

Do I need Silk Touch?

No - tinted glass always drops itself, even broken by hand. It is one of the most forgiving building blocks in the game.
