How to Make Wolf Armor in Minecraft (1.20.5)

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft wolf armor from six armadillo scutes in a helmet-shaped pattern. Equip it on a tamed wolf to absorb all damage until its 64 durability runs out - and dye it any color.

What you need

Armadillo scute x6
Crafting table
Tamed adult wolf

Step by step

Find armadillos: they spawn in savannas and badlands - sneak around them, because they roll up when startled.
Collect scutes: armadillos randomly drop armadillo scutes over time, or brush one for an instant scute (16 durability off your brush).
Craft the armor: place six armadillo scutes on a crafting table - fill the top row, put one in the center slot and one in each bottom side column.
Equip it: use the armor on your tamed wolf - baby wolves cannot wear it.
Trust the protection: wolf armor absorbs all damage from most sources until it breaks - the wolf still flashes red but takes no real damage.
Watch the cracks: the armor visibly cracks at 60, 44 and 20 durability and breaks at 0, losing 1 point per damage point absorbed.
Repair in the field: use an armadillo scute on the armored wolf to restore 8 durability per scute - no anvil needed.
Dye it: wolf armor takes dye like leather armor, so your wolf pack can match your base colors.

Java vs Bedrock

Wolf armor works the same in Java and Bedrock - both got it with the armadillo in the Armored Paws drop. One tooltip quirk: it shows +11 armor, but that is a display bug - it actually absorbs 100% of most damage types.

Versions: Added in 1.20.5 - Armored Paws (23w51a), alongside armadillos. From 24w09a wolves wearing it take no damage at all from the damage types it protects against.
