How to Tame a Wolf in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Bones (5-8)
- A forest or taiga biome
- Meat for healing and breeding
- Wolf armor (optional, armadillo scutes)
Step by step
- Find wolves in forests, taigas and other cool biomes - 1.20.5 added 9 color variants, each tied to a different biome.
- Collect bones from skeletons: a night of hunting or a skeleton spawner farm gets you plenty.
- Hold a bone and feed the wolf (use button). Each bone has a 1 in 3 taming chance, so bring 5-8.
- When hearts appear and the wolf sits with a red collar, it is yours - use the button again to make it stand or sit.
- Your wolf follows you, teleports if you get far, and attacks anything you attack (except creepers, which it ignores).
- Watch its tail: tail height shows health. Feed any meat or fish to heal it, and meat two wolves to breed a pup.
- Gear it up: craft wolf armor from armadillo scutes (6 in a helmet shape) for serious protection - armor absorbs damage until it breaks.
Java vs Bedrock
Bones, the 1-in-3 taming chance and the red collar are the same in Java and Bedrock. All 9 wolf variants and wolf armor (armadillo scutes) exist in both editions since 1.20.5.
Versions: Wolves are one of the oldest mobs, added in Beta 1.4. The Armored Paws drop (1.20.5) added 9 biome-specific variants and wolf armor, and 1.21.5 gave wolves six new sound variants.
Frequently asked questions
How many bones does it take to tame a wolf?
It is random: each bone has a 1 in 3 chance, so most wolves tame within 2-4 bones, but an unlucky streak can take more. A wolf that is already hostile (angry eyes) cannot be tamed.
Will my wolf die fighting for me?
It can, so watch the tail - a low tail means low health, and it whines when hurt. Feed it any meat to heal, or use wolf armor to absorb most damage. Wolves will not attack creepers, so you are safe from friendly explosions.
How do I get all 9 wolf variants?
Each variant spawns in a specific biome: the classic pale wolf in taigas, rusty in sparse jungles, striped in savannas, snowy in groves and so on. Breed two variants and the pup takes one parent's coat.
