How to Play Hardcore Mode in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
Quick answer: Create a new world and set Game Mode to Hardcore (Java: the creation screen; Bedrock: the world settings since 1.21). Difficulty locks to Hard and death is permanent - you can only spectate the world afterwards.
What you need
- A new world - Hardcore is chosen at creation
- Java: creation screen; Bedrock: world settings (1.21+)
- Nerves: death deletes your access to the world
Step by step
- Java: Create New World > Game Mode: Hardcore. The difficulty locks to Hard and cannot be changed.
- Bedrock: world settings > toggle Hardcore on (added in 1.21) - same one-life rules.
- Die once and the world offers Spectator mode only: fly around your builds forever, but never play in that world again.
- Cheats and bonus chests are off by default in Hardcore; the Open to LAN cheat trick still works on Java if you enable it.
- Survival priorities: a bed before night one, a shield before caves, totems of undying before anything risky, and never dig straight down.
- Totems of undying from evokers (woodland mansions and raids) are the only in-game second chance.
- Back up the world folder if you want a personal 'checkpoint' - it is your world, nobody judges.
Java vs Bedrock
Both editions have Hardcore today. Java Hardcore worlds can be reopened in Spectator only; Bedrock shows the same one-life behavior.
Versions: Hardcore has been in Java since 2011 and arrived on Bedrock in 1.21 (2024). Rules are identical on both editions now.
Frequently asked questions
Can I revive a Hardcore world?
Not officially - death is permanent. On Java, editing the world's level.dat with external tools can un-hardcore it, but that is your call.
Does Hardcore cost anything?
No - it is a built-in game mode on both editions, completely free.
