How to Play Minecraft with Friends (Every Way)

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Same edition required: Bedrock players add each other as Xbox friends and join from the Friends tab; Java players open their world to LAN or join the same server IP. Realms is the paid always-on option on both editions; free server hosting works for Java.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Check editions first: Java (PC only) and Bedrock (Windows, consoles, mobile) cannot play together. This is the #1 reason 'it does not work'.
  2. Bedrock, easiest way: everyone signs in with a Microsoft account, one player opens their world with Multiplayer enabled, friends find it in the Friends tab and join. No IP needed.
  3. Same house, any edition: open the world to LAN (Java: Esc > Open to LAN; Bedrock: Multiplayer settings) and others join from the LAN section.
  4. Java servers: one player runs or rents a server, shares the IP, everyone adds it under Multiplayer > Add Server. Free hosting options exist - see our servers section.
  5. Realms: Mojang's official subscription server - always online, works on both editions (separate Realms for Java and Bedrock), one player pays and invites the rest for free.
  6. Match versions: if a friend cannot join, check everyone runs the same game version - version mismatch is the second most common join failure.
  7. On public servers, friend each other and use /tpa or the server's party system to play together instead of hunting coordinates.

Java vs Bedrock

Cross-edition play (Java with Bedrock) is impossible in vanilla. Some unofficial proxy servers bridge them, but that is server-side work - not something clients can fix.

Versions: Applies to current Java and Bedrock. Realms is a paid Mojang subscription; everything else listed here is free.

Frequently asked questions

Can Java and Bedrock players play together?

Not in vanilla - they are different codebases. Some community servers run a proxy (Geyser) that lets Bedrock clients join Java servers, but the server owner must set that up.

Why can I not see my friend's world?

Run the checklist: same edition, same version, the host has Multiplayer toggled on (Bedrock) or opened to LAN (Java), you are Xbox friends (Bedrock online), and nobody's firewall or parental settings block multiplayer.

Is Realms the only always-online option?

No: a rented or self-hosted server stays online without the host playing. Realms is just the simplest - the others are free or cheaper but need more setup.
