How to Ride a Camel in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 1 saddle
- A desert village
- Cactus (to breed)
Step by step
- Find a camel: exactly one spawns in the center of every non-abandoned desert village at world generation.
- Craft or find a saddle - camels are naturally tame, so no mounting ritual is needed.
- Saddle up and ride: the camel seats two players, making it the only official two-seater mount.
- Use the dash: hold the jump control to charge, release to launch up to 12 blocks forward and 1 block up. It recharges every 2.75 seconds.
- Enjoy the height: while mounted, zombies, vindicators, hoglins, silverfish, endermites and sword-wielding piglins cannot reach you. Spiders, wolves and slimes still can.
- Breed more with cactus: feed two camels cactus for a baby - but remember cactus blocks still hurt them on contact.
- Camels sit down when idle: in Bedrock they stand as soon as you mount with a saddle; in Java they rise when you move forward.
Java vs Bedrock
Riding, dashing and two-player seating are identical in Java and Bedrock. Small difference: Bedrock camels stand immediately when mounted with a saddle, while Java camels get up when you press forward. Dash distance and the mob-reach height advantage match in both.
Versions: Camels were added in 1.20 (23w12a, Trails and Tales) as the first new mount in years. The 1.20.2 update refined their standing behavior, and the 26.x cycle even added their hostile desert cousin, the camel husk.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need to tame a camel?
No - camels are naturally tame and always rideable. All you need is a saddle, which since 1.21.6 you can craft from 3 leather and 1 iron ingot instead of hunting loot chests.
How far does a camel dash?
A fully charged dash launches the camel up to 12 blocks forward and 1 block up, enough to clear rivers and ravine edges. The dash recharges every 2.75 seconds, shown on the experience bar.
Camel or horse?
Horse for speed and jump height; camel for safety and style - two seats, melee-proof height and a dash. For deserts, camels win because they outclass every local threat except spiders.
