How to Use a Crafter in Minecraft (Autocrafting Guide)
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 5 iron ingots + 1 crafting table + 2 redstone dust + 1 dropper per crafter
- Hoppers and/or droppers to feed ingredients
- A redstone clock, button or lever for the trigger signal
- Optional: comparator for load detection, chest for output
Step by step
- Craft it: 5 iron ingots, 1 crafting table, 2 redstone dust and 1 dropper.
- Open the GUI: nine slots in a 3x3 grid, just like a crafting table. Click an empty slot to disable it - disabled slots cannot be filled, which is how you lock a shaped recipe in place.
- Feed ingredients with hoppers or droppers pointing into any side. The crafter fills empty enabled slots in reading order (left to right, top to bottom), topping up the smallest matching stack first.
- Send a redstone pulse. Four game ticks (0.2s) later, one crafted item ejects from the front face. A steady signal only crafts once - use a clock or repeated pulses for continuous crafting.
- Point the front face into a chest, barrel or another container to auto-store results. If that container is full or refuses the item, the crafter drops it into the world instead. Recipe byproducts (empty bottles from honey blocks, buckets from cake) eject right after the main item.
- Read it with a comparator: the output signal strength equals the number of slots that are disabled OR contain an item (0-9), regardless of stack size - perfect for detecting a fully loaded crafter.
Java vs Bedrock
Core behavior is identical in both editions. In Java, crafters ignore quasi-connectivity (unlike droppers and dispensers) and pistons cannot move them; in Bedrock pistons can push them.
Versions: Added in Java 1.21 and Bedrock 1.21.0 (2024). Before that it existed behind the Update 1.21 experimental toggles in Java 1.20.3 and Bedrock 1.20.50.
Frequently asked questions
Why won't my crafter craft?
Three usual suspects: the redstone signal is constant instead of pulsing (use a clock), the items do not match a recipe shape, or a disabled slot is blocking an ingredient.
Can hoppers pull items out of a crafter?
Yes - a hopper underneath removes ingredients from the grid, not the crafted result. The result only leaves through the front face when it crafts.
Can a crafter feed another crafter?
Yes. A crafter facing a second crafter inserts its output directly, which lets you chain multi-step recipes automatically.
