They flee and take no fall damage - but they are pets, not targets.
Behavior
Tame a stray cat by standing still with raw cod or salmon until it approaches - then feed it. Tamed cats follow or sit on command, sleep with you, and bring morning gifts (string, feathers, rabbit's foot, phantom membrane...). Creepers and phantoms flee from cats - a cat at your base is a creeper shield.
Taming and breeding
