Spawn conditions: Ocean biomes of every temperature, Y 38-58, groups of 1-3. Becomes persistent after the first player interaction and then stops counting toward any mob cap.

How to kill Nautilus
Untamed adults are neutral and hit back for 2.5-4.5 HP depending on difficulty, and at 6.5 m/s they outswim you. Fight from a boat or in shallow water where it slows down. It is a normal animal, so any weapon works - no undead tricks apply.
Behavior
Neutral while untamed (babies and tamed ones are passive). Once tamed and saddled you steer it with standard controls: it builds up speed in a straight line up to 6.5 m/s and can dash with the jump control - hold it to charge a longer dash. On land a ridden nautilus crawls at 0.88 m/s. Nautilus armor protects it: copper through diamond tiers are found as chest loot (shipwrecks, ocean ruins, buried treasure) and netherite comes from smithing. In Bedrock you cannot go through Nether or End portals while riding one.
Taming and breeding
Tame it by feeding pufferfish or buckets of pufferfish - a 1/3 chance each, and they also work to tempt it. Heal or breed adults with any fish or bucket of fish: pufferfish heals 2 HP (without inflicting Hunger, Poison or Nausea on the nautilus) and raw cod heals 4.
