Minecraft /defaultgamemode command
Java EditionSince Java 1.3.1 (12w22a)
Quick answer: Sets the default game mode for new players joining a world or server. Syntax:
defaultgamemode <gamemode>/defaultgamemode decides which game mode new players get when they join a multiplayer server or LAN world. If force-gamemode is enabled in server.properties, every player is switched to this mode on every join. It does not change the mode of players already online - use /gamemode for that.
Syntax
| Edition | Syntax |
|---|---|
| Java | defaultgamemode <gamemode> |
| Bedrock | (Java Edition only - use world settings in Bedrock) |
Targets / arguments: The world or server itself, not individual players. Requires: Operator level 2.
Examples
/defaultgamemode adventureNew visitors spawn in adventure mode
/defaultgamemode survivalNew players join in survival
Tips
- Pair with force-gamemode=true in server.properties to lock everyone into one mode.
- Bedrock Edition has no /defaultgamemode; set it in the world settings instead.
