Quick answer: The trident can only be thrown while you stand in water or in rain, and it launches you with it instead. Distance is (6 x level) + 3 blocks in rain or standing in water, and (4 x level) + 3 underwater. It does not work where it cannot rain unless you are in water.

Best uses
Fast travel in rainy weather or between water bodies, and a way to propel yourself with elytra in water or rain. It cannot share a trident with Loyalty or Channeling.
Incompatible with
Loyalty, Channeling - an item can only hold one of these.
