All 5 Axolotl Colors in Minecraft (Including the Blue One)
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Buckets of tropical fish to breed axolotls
- A lush caves biome with clay pools
- A water enclosure for your collection
Step by step
- Leucistic (pink): the iconic axolotl look - natural spawn in lush cave water.
- Wild (brown): the natural camouflage color - also a lush caves spawn.
- Gold: golden-yellow, natural spawn.
- Cyan: pale blue-white, natural spawn.
- Blue: the famous one - never spawns naturally. Breed two axolotls and each baby has a 1 in 1200 (0.083%) chance to be blue; otherwise it inherits a parent's color.
- Where to find them: axolotls spawn in water over clay in lush caves, in total darkness - hunt cave pools with a water bucket ready.
- Catching: use a water bucket on an axolotl to carry it - bucketed axolotls never despawn.
- Breeding math: with 1/1200 odds, expect roughly 1200 babies per blue on average - build a breeding pool and feed tropical fish in bulk.
- Combat bonus: axolotls fight drowned, guardians and squids, and grant you Regeneration plus remove Mining Fatigue when you help them.
Java vs Bedrock
Once you breed one blue axolotl, blue counts as a parent color - later babies can simply inherit it, so your second blue is much easier.
Versions: All 5 colors and the 1/1200 blue odds are identical on Java and Bedrock. Blue parents can pass blue on naturally through breeding.
Frequently asked questions
How rare is the blue axolotl?
1 in 1200 per bred baby (0.083%). It cannot spawn naturally at all - breeding is the only way, which is why it became the game's famous collection goal.
Where do axolotls spawn?
Only in lush caves: in water with clay below, in complete darkness. Find a lush cave (look for azalea trees on the surface) and search its pools.
Do axolotl colors do anything?
No - colors are cosmetic. All axolotls fight aquatic mobs and play dead the same way.
