How to Tame an Axolotl in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Axolotls cannot be tamed like wolves, but they follow any player holding a bucket of tropical fish and fight for you in water - granting Regeneration and clearing Mining Fatigue when they help you kill a mob.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Find axolotls in the dark waters of lush caves - they spawn in five colors: pink (lucy), brown (wild), gold, cyan, and the ultra-rare blue.
  2. Catch them with a water bucket: using a bucket on an axolotl scoops it up, and bucketed axolotls never despawn.
  3. Carry a bucket of tropical fish (not raw fish - it must be a live bucket catch) and nearby axolotls follow you.
  4. Breed two axolotls by feeding each a bucket of tropical fish. The baby has a 1 in 1200 chance of being blue - the only way to get one.
  5. Fight alongside them underwater: when an axolotl helps you kill a hostile mob, you get Regeneration I and any Mining Fatigue is removed - perfect for ocean monument raids.
  6. Watch them play dead: a damaged axolotl drops still for 10 seconds, heals up, and enemies ignore it while it recovers.
  7. Keep them wet: axolotls survive about 5 minutes out of water unless it is raining, so give your squad a pool at home.

Java vs Bedrock

Behavior is the same in Java and Bedrock: bucket-catching, tropical fish following and breeding, combat Regeneration and play-dead all match. Blue axolotls are breeding-only (1 in 1200) in both editions since 1.17.1. One edition split: axolotls follow you from 10 blocks away in Java and 16 in Bedrock.

Versions: Axolotls were added in 1.17 (20w51a, Caves and Cliffs part 1). Natural blue spawns existed for only a few months - 1.17.1 made blue breeding-exclusive, a nod to the roughly 1200 axolotls left in the wild in real life.

Frequently asked questions

Can you actually tame an axolotl?

Not in the wolf-and-cat sense. They attach to whoever holds a bucket of tropical fish, they fight beside you, and bucketed ones are yours forever - but there is no collar, no sit command, and no ownership tag.

Why are axolotls good for ocean monuments?

Axolotls attack guardians, drowned, squid and fish, and when one helps you land a kill you get Regeneration I and your Mining Fatigue is wiped - the two things that make elder guardian fights miserable.

How do I get a blue axolotl?

Only by breeding: every baby axolotl has a 1 in 1200 (0.083%) chance of being blue. The odds honor the real axolotl, which survives in the wild only around Lake Xochimilco in Mexico City.
