Best Helmet Enchantments in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Protection IV, Respiration III, Aqua Affinity, Unbreaking III and Mending - plus Thorns III if you want it. The helmet is your underwater piece: Respiration and Aqua Affinity are helmet-only.

What you need

A diamond or netherite helmet
An enchanting table with 15 bookshelves, or an anvil plus enchanted books
Lapis and XP levels

Step by step

Protection IV: best general defense; Blast, Fire and Projectile Protection are alternatives but incompatible on the same piece.
Respiration III: breathe underwater for about a minute total - helmet-only.
Aqua Affinity removes the mining slowdown caused by having your head underwater. It does not remove the separate slowdown from floating, so stand on a block for normal mining speed.
Mending repairs damaged equipped armor with collected XP. Unbreaking III makes armor last about 1.43 times as long on average; the four-times multiplier for tools does not apply to armor.
Thorns III (optional): hurts attackers but costs extra durability. Compare anvil combination costs rather than assuming it must always go on last.
Respiration plus turtle shell: the shell adds 10 more seconds of water breathing and they stack.

Java vs Bedrock

Respiration III + Aqua Affinity turns the helmet into your ocean-monument kit. A powered conduit nearby grants Conduit Power within its range - water breathing, night vision and faster mining - for long underwater sessions.

Versions: Describes the current Java and Bedrock releases. See the edition note above for differences.

Frequently asked questions

Is Aqua Affinity worth it?

Yes. It removes the fivefold mining slowdown from having your head underwater. The separate floating penalty still applies, so stand on a block if you want normal speed.

Respiration or a turtle shell?

Both. The turtle shell gives water breathing, Respiration III extends your air further - combined you can stay down well over a minute before needing air.
